Denmark were never supposed to even be in the ninth European Championship, but they rode their good fortune all the way to hoisting the tournament’s trophy on this day in 1992.

After Yugoslavia’s place in the Euros was disqualified because of the unrest in the country, Denmark were added thanks to their runner-up status in the qualifying group.

They impressively ended the Netherlands’ reign in the semi-finals when Peter Schmeichel saved Marco van Basten’s penalty in the shoot-out, before defeating Germany 2-0 in the final with goals from John Jensen and Kim Vilfort.

It was the final Euros with an eight-team field and Denmark’s lone European championship.

1925: Jim Barnes shoots a 300 at Prestwick Golf Club to win the 60th edition of The Open Championship.

1959: Ingemar Johansson TKOs Floyd Patterson in the third round for the heavyweight title.

2014: Luis Suarez is suspended from the World Cup for his biting incident.

2014: The Cleveland Cavaliers select Andrew Wiggins with the No1 overall pick in the NBA draft.
