On this day in 1975, stoic Swede Bjorn Borg secured his second straight French Open title at just 19 years old as he defeated Guillermo Vilas in straight sets.

Borg is long considered to be one of the greatest ever clay-court players and he gave solidity to that argument with this victory.

Vilas was the No4 seed at the time but simply could not halt the momentum of the young Swede who had dropped only one set – in the semi-finals – during the whole tournament and Borg would triumph 6-2, 6-3, 6-4.

In all, Borg met and defeated three seeded players and won 19 sets, which translated into winning 117 games and losing just 53. He would go on to win four more titles at Roland Garros.
