Whether or not Los Galacticos lived up to their potential is up for debate, but one success they did deliver was the Champions League crown on this day in 2002, giving Real Madrid their ninth European title.

The Spanish giants defeated Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 in Hampden Park, Glasgow with Zinedine Zidane’s winner in the 45th minute.

Real Madrid wasted no time in setting the tone, with Raul putting them on the board in the eighth minute, but the German side would answer just five minutes later with Lucio’s equaliser.

That set the stage for Zidane’s marvellous left-footed finish into the top corner to put Real Madrid ahead for good to claim European glory.

Other famous sporting events on this day:

1941: New York Yankees’ Joe DiMaggio begins his famous 56-game hitting streak.
