The Croatian agreed his move to White Hart Lane from Dinamo Zagreb and was the Premier League’s first summer transfer in 2008.

He penned a six-year deal with the Whites and the north London side paid a club record-equalling £16.5 million for his services.

Modric spent four seasons with Spurs, winning the club’s Player of the Year accolade in 2011 and helping the Premier League side secure Champions League football, before moving to giants Real Madrid in August 2012 for £30m.

Here’s what other memorable events took place on this day:

1912: Hugh Bradley made the first home run at Fenway Park.

2003: South African batsman Jacques Rudolph batted for more than eight-and-a-half hours to become just the fifth man to score a double-century at the first attempt, eventually ending up unbeaten on 222 against Bangladesh.

2009: Jenson Button made it three wins from four at start of his championship winning season for Brawn.

2012: The Charlotte Bobcats set a new record for the lowest-winning percentage in NBA history of 10.6 with a loss to New York Knicks.
