Dressed as iconic super-heroines, the ladies of ’s Wonder Women team represented what the Inter-Gulf Netball Championship was all about.

As competitive as the tournament was and brought together the best in netball from across the GCC, it also featured a social bracket which allowed more casual clubs to take part.

That side of the tournament was once again won by Wonder Women for a second straight year and though they could have fared well in the competitive bracket, they were all too happy to be part of the weekend’s celebration of netball.

“We’re a team of people who just like to be together because of our friendships,” captain Sharyn Pratley said. “It just so happens we know how to play netball, but our lives are busy and involve families and jobs. We don’t train, we just get together and play and we think that defines social.”

They lived up to their team name on the court at The Sevens, defeating Muscat’s A squad 17-6 in the final to earn the cup.

“It was a tough game,” said Jenna McKearney. “We played them the day before and it was a close game, so we had to go out there with our heads held high and really work it from the start. Once we got a lead, we just had to keep possession and work on it. They really pushed us.”

Pratley added: “It’s a really sweet feeling. We were made to work hard the whole tournament and we are proud of ourselves because we keep working hard. We never, ever thought we couldn’t do it, but realised we had to work hard to get it, so we feel like we’ve really earned it and it’s sweet.”

Wonder Women were one of four teams that travelled from Doha for the event, with all of the clubs playing in the social bracket.

The back-to-back title winners won’t have the same group of players next year, but expect to return with new recruits to defend their crown.
