1998: The International Olympic Committee announced Canadian snowboard gold medallist Ross Rebagliati had tested positive for marijuana at the Nagano Winter Olympics in Japan. Rebagliati claimed he had passively inhaled the drug at a party in the weeks leading up to the Games and was subsequently reinstated after it was discovered marijuana was not on the IOC’s list of banned drugs.
2003: Roy Keane, who had stormed out of the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup training camp nine months earlier, announced his retirement from international football. He did return to the Republic team before retiring again.
2004: John Magnier and JP McManus increased their shareholding in Manchester United to 28.89 per cent. The racehorse tycoons later sold their stake to American Malcolm Glazer.
2007: After a 5-0 Ashes defeat, England won the one-day international Commonwealth Bank Series 2-0 after clinching victory over Australia in Sydney.
2009: Lancashire confirmed Peter Moores as their new coach.
2012: Liverpool striker Luis Suarez refused to shake the hand of Manchester United full-back Patrice Evra as the pair faced each other for the first time since a racism storm.
