Romario, 50 today, was a prolific striker renowned for his clinical finishing and is regarded as one of the greatest forwards of all time.

The Brazilian was the star of his side’s 1994 World Cup triumph where he received the Golden Ball as player of the tournament and capped his year being named FIFA World Player of the Year.

He came fifth in the FIFA Player of the Century internet poll in 1999 and was named in the FIFA 100 list of the world’s greatest living players in 2004.

With 55 goals in 70 appearances for Brazil, the former Barcleona and PSV Eindhoven forward is the third highest goalscorer for his national team, ranking behind Pele and Ronaldo. Not bad at all.

1951: Andy Roberts, ex-West Indies and Hampshire fast bowler who took 202 international wickets (65).

1960: Greg Louganis, American ex-diver who won a record four Olympic and five world gold medals.

1980: Ivan Klasnic, ex-Werder Bremen, Bolton and Croatia midfielder who scored 12 international goals (36).

1985: Marc Gasol, Spanish professional basketball player for the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA (31).
