The sprinter wove his way through the bunch finish to take a thrilling one-length victory. Tom Boonen of Etixx-QuickStep finished for second, just ahead of Tinkoff-Saxo's Daniele Bennati in third.

Guardini’s victory puts him top of the general classification, and now wears the inaugural Abu Dhabi Tour leader’s jersey.

Highlights from Day One:

Race organisers made a decision to cut the 14.5km finishing section due to the hot conditions, with temperatures almost reaching 50°C. The heat took its toll on the riders, whose speed was significantly reduced. This in turn increased fears that the race would finish in the dark.

Francesco Mancebo (SkyDive Dubai) was the final rider left from an original six-rider break pack that also comprised Britain’s Mike Thompson (Team Wiggins), Paul Voss (Bora-Argon 18), William Clarke (Drapac), Songezo Jim (MTN-Qhubeka) and Alessandro Bazzana (UnitedHealthcare).

The 2015 Abu Dhabi Tour continues on Friday with stage two from Yas Marina Circuit to Yas Mall over 129km. The flat profile suggests another day for the sprinters.
