Team Sky's Wout Poels won the Tour of Britain's fifth stage on Thursday, while former champion Edvald Boasson Hagen took the overall lead after the race's only summit finish.

MTN-Qhubeka's Boasson Hagen started the day in second place overall and he pushed Poels close on Hartside Fell, but the Dutch rider was able to hold off his advances and win the stage in four hours 12 minutes and 22 seconds.

Despite finishing two seconds behind Poels, Boasson Hagen's efforts were not in vain as the Norwegian took a one-second lead ahead of the Dutchman in the general classification.

Movistar's Juan Lobato, the previous leader, was unable to keep pace on the climb, finishing in 89th spot and falling to 41st overall.
