On this day: October 9, 1991 – Royal Albert Hall hosted the first sumo wrestling tournament outside Japan

The first sumo wrestling tournament ever to be staged outside Japan in the sport's 1500 year history.

The event is taking place in the UK in London's world famous Royal Albert Hall, as part of the ongoing Japan Festival.

Contestants were from Japan's elite Makunouch league and spectators paid in excess of £100 a ticket to enter the sold-out hall which has a capacity of 5000.

1989: The USA routed rivals Spain 3-0 in the 27th Fed Cup (tennis).

1991: The San Jose Sharks beat Calgary 4-3 to win their first NHL title.
