The UAE put on an impressive show to win six medals, including four gold at the recently-concluded Jiu-Jitsu International Federation World Championships for Juniors and Aspirants (U18/U21) in Athens, Greece.

Hamad Nawad (-46kg), Khalid Al Balooshi (-50kg), Khalifa Al Balooshi (-55kg) and Ahmed Al Rajibi (-60kg) triumphed in their categories, while Hussein Al Yafi’i (-60kg) and Ahmed Al Balooshi (-81kg) claimed silver and bronze in their weight groups.

Abdul Moneim Al Hashimi, president of UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation lauded the young fighters.

He said: “I congratulate all the champions returning from Athens following a very successful campaign.

“They have lifted the UAE flag high in one of the toughest international events in this sport. They have been great ambassadors for the UAE and we are proud of them.

“We expect more from them in the future as this is just the beginning. It’s also a good sign for us that we are on the right track and that is evident in the progress they have made."

Their efforts at the three-day event helped the UAE place sixth in the medals table, with Russia topping the tally with a haul of 16 gold, 12 silver and 19 bronze medals.
