Places running out for first GO Sport triathlon of the season

Less than one hundred places remain if you want to take part in the opening race of the new season of the GO Sport/2XU Triathlon Series.

So far, nearly 450 people have signed up for the race, which is scheduled for Friday, October 24, beginning at 07:00 at Mamzar Beach in Dubai.

The series, is sanctioned by the Dubai Sports Council, is open to all ages and abilities and you can take part individually, or in relay teams of two or three.

The race will be on closed roads and a designated running track to ensure safety for all participants.

There will be three race categories which vary accordingly to age.

The junior super sprint, open to children 12-years and under, consists of a 200m swim, 8km cycle and 2.5km run.

If you’re a beginner then the super sprint, open to 13-year-olds and above, is a 375m swim, 8km cycle and 2.5km run, which can be participated by teams.

If you want something more testing, then the sprint category involves a 750m swim, 24km cycle and 5km run, open for individuals An all-round test: The Olympic category includes 40km cycling and 10km run. and relay teams from juniors and 18-year-olds and above.

And those who have plenty of triathlon experience, the Olympic category is a 1.5km swim, 40km cycle and 10km run, open for all ages.

Race director, Warren van der Merwe, has advised people who want to take part, to sign up as soon as possible before all the places are taken up.

He said: “This is the only race series of its kind in the UAE and offers athletes of all ages and abilities the opportunity to put their skills to test with a choice of three different distances on the day.

“The interest has been amazing and we only have less than 100 spots open until we reach our maximum capacity of 550 athletes.”

And sponsors 2XU has echoed van der Merwe’s view. Khalil Almasry, 2XU brand manager, said: “With the announcement that the UAE will host an ITU event for the next five years, it is going to make this sport boom even more and we are ready to welcome all new triathletes to this sport and introduce them to our brand.

“The synergy between this race series and 2XU is what it is all about and we look forward to seeing some of the old, familiar faces as well as plenty of newcomers in race one.”

And Beryl Kyte, marketing manager of Al Mana Fashion Group, sports division, is delighted to be associated with the sport.

She said: “It has been great to see how the events have grown over the years and how much it means to competitors of all ages and abilities to get out there and train, compete, socialise and strive for their goals. This is what GO Sport represents – active lifestyles.”
