The popular Dubai Women’s Run returns for its seventh straight year in Dubai with more than 10,000 women expected to participate this year.

Organised by the UAE Athletics Federation under the patronage of Shaikh Ahmad Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the UAE National Olympic Committee, the race will feature a 5km and 10km race for those who take part.

The 2017 instalment will include Kenyan long-distance track and road runner, Tegla Loroupe, who will be one of the elite athletes competing in this year’s run.

Speaking at the press conference at Al Habtoor City Tuesday, UAE Athletics Federation President Ahmed Al Kamali said: “Dubai Women’s Run is taking an important stand this year to uphold the Nation’s agenda to put women empowerment at the forefront in addition to encouraging women to prioritize health and fitness.”

Saeed Hareb, Secretary General of the Dubai Sports Council (DSC) who was also present on the occasion added: “Over the years, Dubai Women’s Run has grown to become a popular event not just in the UAE but across the region.

“The event embodies the council’s goal to create a distinctive sports community to popularize the culture of exercise, physical activities and sports among women and to establish a solid foundation amongst professionals and amateurs.”

Prominent favourite for the 5km title is UAE athlete and three-time Dubai Women’s Run winner Betlhem Desalegn who will return to action after more than a year out due to injury.

She said: “It will be my first time back. I’ve won this race three times and I’m excited to be here. I’m so happy to represent my country.”

“I always want to win… I hope to run faster than I did before and I’m hoping to see my PB here.”

This year’s run will start off from Marasi Business Bay on November 17.
