Take great strides at the Mafraq cross country race

If you’re a runner and want to experience a cross country challenge, then why not take part in the Mafraq Hotel run on Friday, March 21?

Now in its 15th edition, the cross country race has grown rapidly and with over 150 participating last year, organisers Abu Dhabi Striders are expecting a much bigger crowd this time round.

The race offers adult runners the chance to prove themselves over different terrains close to the hotel on either a 5km or 10km course with a 2km course available to juniors under 10.

The 5km race category is open to people aged 5 and over, while children aged 10 and over can choose to participate alongside adults in the 10km run.

If the over-10s don’t want to compete in the 10km run, they can opt to run the 2km run on tarmac and a short cross country section on mostly hard sand which gives them equal bragging rights with their parents.

Each year the Abu Dhabi Striders and Mafraq Hotel in Abu Dhabi combine forces to organise an event that takes runners through the roads adjoining the hotel and off road through a mix of soft and hard sand. The mixed terrain makes this event unique compared to other road races in the UAE by challenging runners to draw on the strength of training throughout the winter months.

Running over soft sand on parts of the course will help runners raise a sweat and their heart rates, before they head to the finish line at the Mafraq Hotel.

Steve Watson of Abu Dhabi Striders insists the event is ‘unique’ in its own way.

“It’s a unique run rather than a race. It’s an event where you can combine a run and relax with a nice BBQ meal afterwards. It’s a family community run and there is a competitive element to it like all of them. But the emphasis is getting out and accepting the challenge of a doing the run.

“It’s something different from your usual races. It’s unique in its own way and allows people to run in a safe environment. It’s always been known as the end of season run. There is a social element and all people are welcome to run.”

Daniel Hughes of the Abu Dhabi Striders said: “After another successful running season and year of growing participation, we look forward to taking runners off the beaten track and then getting together for what will be a great day out.”
