UAE’s Fursan Al Emarat joined Bravo3 Repsol, Breitling Wingwalkers and Richard Goodwin in Saturday’s Grand Final after wowing judges and spectators with breathtaking displays at the Al Ain Air Championship.

With nine top teams in action, competition was certainly tough at Al Ain International Airport as they showcased their heart-stopping stunts. Besides the judges scores, the spectators also cast their votes, making up 35 per cent of the team’s total.

In Friday’s semi-finals, Bravo3 Repsol, led by European champion Castor Fantoba, topped the standings with a score of 33.40 ahead of Breitling Wingwalkers, who were second with 32.85.

Another UK team – Richard Goodwin – booked their place with a third-place finish of 32.42, while Fursan Al Emarat sealed the last qualification berth with 32.15. All four will battle for glory in the 11th edition of the tournament beginning from 15:00 on Saturday.

For Fantoba, the Spaniard had voiced his opinion that fans’ votes would add more pressure to his team earlier this week but he is delighted to have impressed them so far.

“Usually we are performing just for the judges but this time the spectators had something to say. So far whatever we are doing, it seems they are happy,” said the 49-year-old.

He added: “Today the conditions were just perfect. Visibility was awesome and I think that is important because the smoke and the co-ordination between the three planes is a great advantage for us.”

And Fantoba hopes to put his 20 years of experience count today but is wary of the competition he faces.

“From what I’ve seen, it’s going to be a tough final. Breitling Wingwalkers and Richard Goodwin will be stiff opponents but I have a lot of expectations going into tomorrow’s action,” said the six-time Spanish champion.

“It’s the biggest and defining day as the championship will be decided. I hope we can build on this performance as the final will always be difficult. But we are happy to be there and confident.”
