The 2012-13 season was a glorious one for Manchester United and Robin van Persie, who flourished in his debut campaign as the Red Devils won the Premier League in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season.

The Dutchman’s 92nd-minute free-kick gave United a 3-2 win at the home of fierce Manchester rivals City on this day three years ago, Van Persie’s effort curling in past Joe Hart via a Samir Nasri deflection to send Reds fans into raptures.

It settled a superb game in which Wayne Rooney had given United a 2-0 first-half lead, only to see City level through Yaya Toure and Pablo Zabaleta’s 86th minute equaliser, which looked to have rescued a point. Van Persie had other ideas.

1935: The Downtown Athletic Club Trophy, later renamed the Heisman Trophy, is won for the first time by half-back Jay Berwanger of the University of Chicago.

1988: Jerry Sloan is named Utah Jazz head coach. Sloan’s tenure ended in 2011 and is the longest coaching reign in NBA history.

2000: Ledley King scores the fastest Premier League goal in Spurs’ 3-3 draw with Bradford City.

2012: Juan Manuel Marquez knocks out Manny Pacquiao in Round 6 for the WBO light welterweight title.
