Exactly a year ago, Lionel Messi added a new chapter to his storied career when he set a new La Liga record of 253 goals, thanks to a hat-trick scored in Barcelona’s 5-1 win over Sevilla in the Spanish league.

The previous mark was held by former Athletic Bilbao striker Telmo Zarra since 1955, which marked the end of the Spaniard’s 15-year career with the Basque club.

Zarra scored his 251 goals in 277 appearances while Argentina captain Messi, who was 17 when he netted for the first time in Spain’s top flight against Albacete in May 2005, needed 289 games to reach his record.

1974: Two all-time greats made their Test debuts in the first Test between West Indies and India in Bangalore – Viv Richards and Gordon Greenidge.

1986: Facing the Vancouver Canucks, Wayne Gretzky becomes the 13th NHL player to score 500 goals and fastest to reach the mark.

1986: Mike Tyson KOs Trevor Berbick to become the youngest heavyweight champion in history.

2003: England win the Rugby World Cup, beating Australia 20-17 in the final.
