The female equivilent of the Ryder Cup was claimed for the first time on this day 25 years ago by America, who beat Europe 11-4 at Lake Nona Golf & Country Club in Orlando, Florida.

The hosts were in charge throughout and had built a 3-1 lead on the opening day foursomes, and had stretched that advantage to 6-2 after the second day fourballs, but they completely blew away the Europeans on the final day.

Wins for Pat Bradley, Beth Daniel, Nancy Lopez, Cathy Gerring and Dottie Mochrie in the final day singles match-ups saw the US dominate as captain Kathy Whitworth’s side securred a seven-shot victory to claim the inaugural trophy.
