The New York Yankees claimed Game 6 of the 2009 World Series on this day six years ago to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-3.

The victory gave the Yankees their 27th championship, a feat untouched to this day, and it was a quest nine years in the making.

Hideki Matsui became the first Japanese-born player to win the Most Valuable Player award after he led the Yankees’ offense with a record-tying night — he had a home run, a double, a single and six runs batted in.

Yankees Manager Joe Girardi, who the season prior failed to take the team to the postseason in his first year in charge, became the first Yankees manager not named Joe Torre to win a World Series in 31 years.

1983: The Washington Capitals get their first NHL overtime victory ever after beating Vancouver 5-4.

1990: Ayrton Senna wrapped up his second F1 title in Australia after the controversial Suzuka GP in which Senna rammed into rival Alain Prost at the first corner, taking both of them out of the race.

1990: Kenya’s Douglas Wakiihuri, wearing his famous white gloves, claimed victory in the 21st NYC Marathon in 2:12:39.

1995: Key Arena opens with Seattle Supersonics beating the LA Lakers.
