An early goal from Darren Peacock was followed by a wonderful strike from the mecurial David Ginola before Les Ferdinand and Alan Shearer got in on the act.
Belgian Philippe Albert then wrapped up a memorable night for the Geordies with a delicious left-footed chip over Peter Schmeichel from 25 yards to send the Toon to the top of the table.
