As they say, records are there to be broken, and while Brian Lara’s 375 against England in 1994 seemed insurmountable, Hayden was just the sort of batsman to rise to a challenge. Starting the second day of the first Test against Zimbabwe on 183, Hayden reached 271 by lunch, beating his own previous personal best of 203.

But he wasn’t done there and as Steve Waugh held off the declaration he raced past Lara’s mark with an on-drive through the covers before falling short of 400 courtesy of Stuart Carlisle’s brilliant catch. His 380 came inside 438 balls with 38 fours and 11 sixes. Lara, of course, retook the record with 400 against England 18 months later.
