Europe’s prospects for retaining the Ryder Cup appeared bleak heading into the final day with the US leading 10-6, but the cup holders achieved one of the greatest comebacks in the event’s history in what was dubbed the ‘Miracle at Medinah’.
The 39th edition took place at the Medinah Country Club in Illinois, marking the first time the event was held in the state.
Europe fought back on the final day by winning eight and tying one of the 12 singles matches, with Martin Kaymer’s five-foot putt on the 18th hole to defeat Steve Stricker giving his team the 14-13 edge.
The final point was halved as Europe claimed their fifth victory in the last six meetings.
