Nigel Winterburn earned a fine reputation during his career of keeping the ball out of the net instead of firing into it. The now 51-year-old scored only eight times for Arsenal from 1987-2000.

But he produced one of the most memorable strikes in Premier League history on this day 18 years ago.

The Gunners appeared headed for a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge against Ruud Gullit’s on-song Chelsea team.

The left-back picked the ball up in midfield with only two minutes to go, being allowed to advance unchecked before unleashing an unstoppable shot which flew into the top far corner past flailing goalkeeper Ed de Goey.

It was a key moment in Arsenal’s march to the 1997/98 title.

1955: Legendary heavyweight Rocky Marciano competed in his last title bout, knocking out Archie Moore within nine rounds.

1986: Nigel Mansell teed up a Formula One-title decider in Mexico with a flawless victory at the Portuguese Grand Prix.

1997: Ijaz Ahmed (60) was key as Pakistan claimed victory in the final game of the Sahara Cup ODI series against India, who won 4-1.

2008: The 37th Ryder Cup reached its conclusion, Europe captain Nick Faldo being heavily criticised after 16.5-11.5 loss to United States.
