Cricket legends do not come much bigger in size or achievements than the West Indies fast bowler Curtly Ambrose, who turns 52 today.

The 6ft 7in Antiguan is one of the most feared pace men of all time, claiming 405 wickets in 98 Test appearances at an average of 20.99.

He was a daunting prospect for any batsman, allying punishing accuracy with the bounce and pace expected by someone of his height. His partnership with Courtney Walsh is one of the finest in history, often single-handedly carrying their team to success.

After retiring in 2000, Ambrose has been inducted into the International Cricket Council Hall of Fame and selected in West Indies’ all-time XI by a panel of experts.

The ex-Northamptonshire man was reluctant to talk to journalists during his career, famously saying “Curtly talks to no-one” in 1991.

1963: Cecil Fielder, one of MLB’s greatest power hitters and a three-times All Star while at Detroit Tigers (52).

1978: Doug Howlett, retired rugby union back who is the highest try scorer for New Zealand in Tests with 49 (37).

1979: Chris Gayle (below), iconic Jamaican cricketer who is known for his incredible hitting (36).

1983: Anna Meares, Australian track cyclist who is a gold medalist at the Commonwealth and Olympic Games (32).
