“The lovable loser from London finally became a boxing winner last night,” wrote one boxing journalist the day after Frank Bruno claimed a 12-round unanimous decision over Chicago’s Oliver McCall to grab the World Boxing Council heavyweight championship before an ecstatic home crowd at Wembley Stadium.

It was Bruno’s fourth and presumably final attempt at the title and he finally earned it to become just the fourth Brit in history to grab that honour on this day, 20 years ago.

“If I never walk again, get run over or get shot, it’s down in history that I’m heavyweight champion,” said Bruno after the fight.

Other memorable events on this day…

1960: Tamara and Irina Press of the Soviet Union become the first sisters to win Olympic gold at the same Games when Tamara won the shot put in Rome after Irina had won the 80m hurdle earlier.

1970: The tiebreak is used for the first time officially in tennis. It was introduced at the US Open and was won by the first player to reach five points.

1971: A 16-year-old Chris Evert makes her US Open debut, beating Edda Buding-Duchting 6-1, 6-0. Evert made semis that year and went on to win six US Opens.
