Clive Lloyd was one of the most successful captains in cricket and a Caribbean legend. Lloyd, who turns 71 today, captained the West Indies between 1974 and 1985, a period where they were a dominant force in cricket.

He skippered in 74 of his 110 Tests and led the team to a record 26 matches without defeat, which included a clean sweep of England in 1984. He was also at the helm when the West Indies won two World Cup titles (in 1975 and 1979) while entering another final (1983).

His knock of 102 in the 1975 title clash is considered one of the finest innings in the showpiece event.

Lloyd was a hard-hitting middle order batsman, scoring 7,515 runs at Test level at an average of 46.67. After retirement, he managed the West Indies in the late 1990s and later on became an ICC match referee.

1955: Ed Moses, America’s 1976 and 1984 Olympic 400 metres hurdles champion (60).

1969: Javagal Srinath, former Indian fast bowler and current ICC match referee (46).

1971: Padraig Harrington, Ireland’s three-time major winner and Ryder Cup player (44).

1982: Jose Reina, Spanish goalkeeper, currently playing at Napoli (33).
