On this day: August 25, 1991 – Michael Schumacher makes F1 debut

1991: The German Formula One legend Michael Schumacher made his Formula One debut in the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa Francorchamps on this day in 1991.

Schumacher retired during the first lap of that first Grand Prix with clutch problems, but he managed to draw the attention of Benetton, another Formula One constructor. Benetton soon signed the rising youngster which kick started a sucessful five-year collaboration.

1950: Sugar Ray Robinson knocks out Jose Basora, with whom he had previously drawn. His 50-second first round K/O of Basora set a record that would stand for 38 years.

1960: The American Football League begins placing players’ names on back of their jersies.

1985: NY Met’s Dwight Gooden becomes the youngest pitcher to win 20 games (20years, nine months, nine days).

1991: Cubs Doug Dascenzo commits his first career error after 242 games.
