Carl Lewis was quite simply one the greatest athletes the world of sport has seen.

The American former track and field legend won 10 Olympic medals, including nine gold, and as many world championships medals.

Lewis dominated the track and field, topping the world rankings in 100m, 200m and long jump events from 1981 to the early 1990s.

He set world records in 100m, 4x100m and 4x200m relays, while his world record in the indoor long jump has stood for more than three decades.

Lewis took part in his first Olympics at the 1984 Los Angeles Games.

In 100m, he won all three of his heats. In the final, held on this day back in 1984, compatriot Sam Graddy beat Lewis out of the blocks.

But Lewis caught the leaders with 25 metres and pulled away, clinching his first gold medal in a time of 9.99s.
