It is poignant that on this day last year McIllroy won his first The British Open given that he would not be participating in 12 months time due to an innocuous challenge on a five a side pitch.

Mc Illroy had been coming into the 2014 contest having only won his first contest in 18 months with a one stroke win at the BMW PGA Championship that May at Wentworth.

Having led The Open field throughout at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club, he became only the third golfer to win three majors before the age of 25 ,after Jack Nickolaus and Tiger Woods.

He also became the first British/European golfer to do this.A magnificent achievement for a young golfer.

Other memorable events that happened on this day…
