Last year’s match-up between the best team in the world and the world’s best player lived up to the billing as late drama decided the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Rio de Janeiro. The lone goal in Germany’s 1-0 victory over Argentina and Lionel Messi came in extra time from Mario Gotze.

The Man of the Match became the first substitute to score a World Cup-winning goal when he struck in the 113th minute after receiving a cross from Andre Schurrle and volleying a shot past goalkeeper Sergio Romero. Messi had a last-gasp opportunity to equalise with a late free kick, but couldn’t convert as Germany got back on top of the football world for the first time since 1990.
