There have been few boxers better than Julio Cesar Chavez in the history of the sport.

The Mexican former pugilist, born on this day in 1962, was considered the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world for a period of time.

He was known for his power punching as a knockout artist and earned six world championships in three weight divisions: super featherweight, lightweight and light welterweight.

Chavez finished with a career record of 107-6-2 with 86 knockouts, but was at one point a perfect 89-0-1 before suffering his first loss and has the longest undefeated streak in boxing history at 13 years.

He holds records for most world title defences with 27, most title fight victories with 31 and most title fights with 37. Chavez stepped in a ring for the final time in 2005 and was inducted to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2010.
