While the Dutch stormed through the field to reach the final of the Word Cup, West Germany stumbled into the title match to set up what looked to be a one-sided affair in Munich on this day in 1974. But it was the Germans who prevailed in a shocker, overcoming an early deficit to lift the trophy.

Led by star Johan Cruyff, the Dutch struck first via a Johan Neeskens penalty in the second minute. Germany evened the score with a penalty in the 25th minute by Paul Breitner, before Gerd Muller struck just before half time in the 43rd minute to put them ahead for good. This Netherlands team is widely considered the best squad to never claim football’s biggest prize.
