A year after breaking through to claim his first Wimbledon title, Roger Federer successfully defended his crown with a hardfought 4–6, 7–5, 7–6(7–3), 6–4 victory over Andy Roddick in the men’s singles final back on this day in 2004.

After the second rain delay, Federer found his groove and earned the tiebreaker in the third set to go up 2-1.

In the fourth set, the Swiss saved six break points and broke Roddick to take a 4-3 lead, giving him the cushion to finish off the American in style with an ace.
