The Don’s Lord’s masterpiece. Bradman’s average at Lord’s was a relatively paltry 78, but in his first Test innings there he lashed a glorious 254.

It propelled Australia to 720 for 6 – the highest total in any first-class match at Lord’s – and ultimately a sevenwicket victory.

It was part of a glorious summer for Bradman, who ended his miraculous bout of run-making in the series with a double hundred at The Oval and took his aggregate to 974 runs in five Tests, his sequence of scores being eight, 131, 254, 1, 334, 14 and 232.

His 334 at Headingley is remembered best, but it was on this day in 1930 he had one of the great knocks Lord’s has seen. The Aussies, by the way, pinched the series 2-1.

Other memorable events to happen on this day:

1989: England beat Australia 17-1 in Sydney, although the FA do not list the match as a full international.

1990: Jockey Willie Carson becomes only the third man, after Gordon Richards and Alec Russell, to ride six winners at one meeting.

1998: David Beckham is sent off as England are knocked out of the World Cup on penalties by Argentina in the second round.

2002: Ronaldo scores twice as Brazil win the World Cup for the fifth time after beating Germany 2-0 in the final in Yokohama.
