On this day in 1978, Ian Botham became the first man to score a century and take eight wickets (eight for 34) in a Test match innings, against Pakistan for England at Lord's.

'Beefy' was a genuine all-rounder with 14 centuries and 383 wickets in Test cricket.

This occasion against Pakistan is one that both Botham and cricket fans all around the world will struggle to forget.

2009: Arsenal signed Belgium defender Thomas Vermaelen from Ajax.

2010: France striker Nicolas Anelka was sent home from the World Cup in South Africa after refusing to apologise for his half-time rant at coach Raymond Domenech during the 2-0 defeat to Mexico earlier that week.
