However, the star of the show was a youthful Nigel Spink in the Villa goal.

An injury to Jimmy Rimmer on 10 minutes brought Spink on for just his second professional appearance and he produced a virtuoso display to keep Bayern out and record a clean sheet in Rotterdam.
