One of sport’s most-heated rivalries was brought back to boiling point on this day, 18 years ago. India and Pakistan had not taken to the cricket field in a Test against each other in nine years before the nations met in Chennai. A classic contest was to make it worth the wait. The clash see-sawed either way.
First, 18-year-old Shahid Afridi belted 141 to take Pakistan to 275 for 4 – a lead of 263. The tourists seemed poised for a comfortable win, before a late collapse added just eight more runs.
India icon Sachin Tendulkar powered home a stupendous 136 to put the hosts onto 254-6. But once the batting great holed out, Pakistan would race through the tail to earn a dramatic 12-run win.
