Lazio and Roma faced off for the first time, with Roma winning thanks to a late goal from striker Rodolfo Volk.

Roma were founded in 1927 – brought together by consolidating three other clubs based in the capital in an effort to construct a team that could compete with the stronger clubs based in the north. On the other hand, Lazio, founded in 1900, resisted inclusion, becoming the only major from Rome to do so.

Their first meet was a Serie A tie played at the Campo Rondinella, where AS Roma claimed victory after a 73rd minute strike from Volk. Since this first encounter, the fierce rivalry has extended to more than 180 matches, with Roma boasting more wins than Lazio. The Giallorossi hold the record for the longest-winning streak, recording six consecutive triumphs from 1950 to 1953.

Known in Italy as the Derby della Capitale, the fixture has become one of the more heated derbies in football, with several incidents of extreme violence on both sides. The worst moment came in 1979, when a Roma supporter fired a flare into the crowd, killing Lazio supporter Vincenzo Paparelli.

More memorable events on this day:

1956: 16th Olympic Games close at Melbourne, Australia.

1985: Martina Navratilova beats Chris Evert-Lloyd to lift the 74th Australian Open title.

1987: Philadelphia Flyers’ Ron Hextall becomes first goalie to score a goal.

1988: New York Knicks set NBA record of 11 3-pointers & sink Milwaukee Bucks 113-109.
