Facing Belgium in the final, Great Britain were already 2-1 up in the best-of-five tie after Andy and his brother Jamie won their doubles to take the lead on the previous day. Andy took to the court again on the final day, knowing victory over David Goffin would seal the title.

Playing on clay, he produced a dominant display to win in straight sets (6-3, 7-5, 6-3) as Britain took an unassailable lead for their first Davis Cup triumph since 1936 and 10th overall.

Other memorable events on this day:

2000: Stoke suffer their heaviest home defeat in 97 years, losing 8-0 to Liverpool in the League Cup.

2006: England rugby’s head coach Andy Robinson stands down after a record of nine wins and 13 losses during his two years in charge.

2015: Australia defeat New Zealand by three-wickets in the first day-night Test match in Adelaide, watched by an all-time record of 123,736 – most for a non-Ashes Test.
