Wladimir Klitschko’s iron-clad grip on heavyweight boxing was broken a year ago today.

It seems far longer given what has happened to Tyson Fury in the intervening months but make no mistake, this was one of the finest moments in British boxing history.

Fury was a 4-1 underdog going into the clash but in a dour and often messy fight, he displayed the superior boxing skills to fully merit a unanimous decision win, taking home the WBA, IBF and WBO titles.

The defeat broke a nine-year reign atop the division for the Ukranian and meant Fury became only the fifth bona fide heavyweight world champion. One hopes the rematch will happen one day.

1975: Bobby Orr played his last game for the Boston Bruins.

2004: Stephen Maguire is crowned UK snooker champion after beating David Gray 10-1 in the York final.

2012: Ashley Giles was named as the new England limited-overs head coach.

2015: Jamie Vardy scored for the 11th match in a row to break Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Premier League record.
