Sachin Tendulkar and Waqar Younis called time on their careers some time ago now but it was on this day 27 years ago that the two made their Test debuts in an India-Pakistan clash.

Tendulkar was just 16 when he took to the field in Karachi but only made 15, after being bowled by a 17-year-old Younis.

The match ended in a draw but that was just the start as Tendulkar and Younis began to make a name for themselves in all formats.

Tendulkar went on to become one of the greatest batsmen ever, setting numerous records including scoring 100 international centuries before quitting in 2013, while ex-Pakistan skipper Younis went on to take more than 700 international scalps.

Here’s the other sporting events that happened on this day:

1987: The Australian GP forms a round of the Formula One world championship for the first time.

1989: Nigel Martyn becomes the first £1million goalkeeper when he moves from Bristol Rovers to Crystal Palace.

2004: London Olympic chiefs submit the city’s bid to host the 2012 Games.

2015: Nico Rosberg wins the Brazilian Grand Prix ahead of Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton, who labels the race ‘’boring’’.
