It remains one of the unlikeliest results in the history of football, but on this day in 1993, in their first and only European campaign, ‘country bumpkins’ Norwich City beat Bayern Munich 2-1 at the German giants Olympic Stadium.

English football was suffering at the time with the national team heading out of the World Cup qualifiers and club sides still overcoming the effects of the five-year European ban after Heysel.

But it was given a spark in the first leg of the UEFA Cup tie as Jeremy Goss scored a sublime volley to seal a famous 2-1 over a Bayern side led by Lothar Matthaus.

The Canaries became the first English side ever to beat Bayern at home.

More memorable events on this day:

1958: Stirling Moss beats Mike Hawthorn in the one and only Moroccan Grand Prix.

1966: Bobby Orr makes his NHL regular-season debut for the Boston Bruins against the Detroit Red Wings.

2007: Andrew Strauss is dropped for England’s Test tour of Sri Lanka.

2010: Man United boss Sir Alex Ferguson reveals Wayne Rooney wanted to leave the club.
