Bouncing back from an early US Open exit at the hands of Stan Wawrinka, a virus that drained him for weeks and a disappointing loss to Ivan Ljubicic in Beijing, Andy Murray beat Roger Federer 6-3, 6-2 to capture the Shanghai Masters trophy on this day six years ago.

Murray started the 2010 season by losing to Federer in the Australian Open final, but in best-of-three play, the Scot, aged 23 at the time, made sure he had the upper hand.

Murray needed just 85 minutes to dismiss Federer, a 16-time grand slam champion at the time. It was Murray’s eighth victory over the Swiss legend, in 13 meetings, and it earned him a sixth Masters 1000 trophy.

More memorable events on this day:

1860: The first Open Championship of golf is played at Prestwick. Eight men took part over three rounds of the 12-hole course and the winner was Willie Park Sr.

1995: A samba band and 5,000 fans turn out at the Riverside Stadium to welcome new midfield signing Juninho, the Brazilian player of the year, who cost Middlesbrough £4.75 million from Sao Paulo.

2008: India’s Sachin Tendulkar becomes the leading run-scorer in Test cricket after reaching 16 in the second Test against Australia in Mohali.
