It is perhaps more poignant than ever to reflect now that it was 48 years ago today when one of the Olympic Games’ most iconic moments occurred.

American sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos each raised a black-gloved fist throughout the playing of the Star-Spangled Banner on the podium after winning gold and bronze in the 200m in Mexico City. It is a symbol of resistance and defiance that became engrained into 20th-century history, a protest against racial discrimination.

Adding to its power was how Australian silver medalist Peter Norman joined the duo by wearing human rights badges on their jackets.
