It is perhaps more poignant than ever to reflect now that it was 48 years ago today when one of the Olympic Games’ most iconic moments occurred.

American sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos each raised a black-gloved fist throughout the playing of the Star-Spangled Banner on the podium after winning gold and bronze in the 200m in Mexico City. It is a symbol of resistance and defiance that became engrained into 20th-century history, a protest against racial discrimination.

Adding to its power was how Australian silver medalist Peter Norman joined the duo by wearing human rights badges on their jackets.

Here’s other memorable events that happened on this day:

1983: The US win the 25th Ryder Cup, beating Europe 14½-13½ at the PGA National Golf Club in Florida.

2004: A 17-year-old Lionel Messi makes his league debut for Barcelona against Espanyol.

2005: San Diego running back LaDainian Tomlinson becomes the seventh NFL player to run, catch and throw a touchdown in the Chargers’ victory over the Oakland Raiders.
