It’s hard to argue that the 2010 edition of the Ryder Cup isn’t one of the most memorable with its extra day and thrilling finish.

Concluding on this date six years ago in Wales, the tournament’s final day fell on Monday for the first time ever as torrential rain earlier in the weekend extended the calendar.

The Americans fought back on the closing day with Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson leading the way, but the 28th and final game went to the Europeans as Graeme McDowell rose to the occasion to beat Hunter Mahan.

Europe won by a final score of 14 1/2 to 13 1/2 to regain the Cup and it was their sixth victory in the past eight contests.

More memorable events on this day:

1895: Horace Rawlins wins the first ever US Golf Open in Newport, Rhode Island.

2001: San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds ties an MLB record with his 70th home run of the season.

2012: Formula One great Michael Schumacher calls it a career.

2014: Australia defeat New Zealand 27-19 to claim the 20th Rugby Championship.
