After being at the peak of boxing for so long, Muhammad Ali finally reached the end of his rope in his attempt to win an unprecedented fourth world heavyweight title.

On this day in 1980, reigning world heavyweight champion Larry Holmes extended his perfect record with a TKO victory over Ali in what was billed as ‘The Last Hurrah’.

Heading into the fight, there were rumours Ali struggled to be cleared during a neurological exam, but the Nevada State Athletic Commission went ahead with the bout and the results were fairly predictable.

The end of the 10th round was as far as Ali could last as Holmes earned the TKO and every round of the fight by all three judges.
