On this Day – September 26, 1956: Manchester United thrash Anderlecht in European Cup

On Saturday, Manchester United ran riot in their 4-1 victory over Leicester City and on this day 60 years ago, it was more of the same.

Sir Matt Busby’s side had already triumphed 2-0 in the first leg against Anderlecht in Brussels but there was still all to do to advance from the preliminary round of the 1956 European Cup.

But Dennis Viollet led the way with four goals, Tommy Taylor bagged a hat-trick, Liam Whelan grabbed two and Johnny Berry scored in the 10-0 success at Old Trafford.

It was the first time at British club had hit double figures as United strode to a 12-0 aggregate win.
