The first running of an exhilariting 2007 ICC World Twenty20 reached its conclusion on this day, nine years ago.

India emerged as the champions from a breathless inaugural event, which had featured up to three matches a day during less than a fortnight’s play.

India had set a tantalising 158 for bitter rivals Pakistan to win, following Gautam Gambhir’s 75. Pakistan were out of contention at 77-6, only for the big-hitting Misbahul- Haq to strike a trio of sixes to drag his team back into contention.

But this was as good as it got for them with Misbah soon choosing the wrong shot. S. Sreesanth was the recipient and India had their first title since 1983.

1844: Canada defeated USA in their first cricket clash, coming 32 years before the opening Ashes clash.

1953: Rocky Marciano TKOs Roland LaStarza for heavyweight title.

1998: NBA announces delay to training camps because of stalled collective bargaining negotiations.

2000: Ferrari’s Michael Schumacher wins first United States Grand Prix held at Indianapolis in a decade.
