Entering the 37th Ryder Cup at Valhalla Golf Club, Europe had a stranglehold on the competition with three consecutive victories over the United States.

But on this day in 2008, the Americans didn’t just snap their rivals’ streak, but secured their largest margin of victory in 27 years by winning 16 1/2 to 11 1/2.

Paul Azinger’s men held the lead after every session of play for the first time since 1979, while Europe captain Nick Faldo received flack for saving his best players until the end, by which point the United States had already finished off the job.

The win came courtesy of Jim Furyk’s defeat of Miguel Angel Jimenez 2 & 1 on the final day to change the tide.

More memorable events on this day:

1955: Rocky Marciano wins his final bout against Archie Moore to retire as world heavyweight champion.

1969: Rhe United States defeat Romania to win the 58th edition of the Davis Cup.

1986: Miami Dolphins legend Dan Marino throws six touchdown passes in a 51-45 overtime win over NY Jets.

1989: USA Basketball announces the ‘Dream Team’ for the 1992 Olympics.
