In recent times, Derby County have been known for holding the record for the lowest points tally in a Premier League season after ending the 2008-09 season with just 11.

However, on this day, 40 years ago, the club became the first British team to score a dozen in Europe as they thumped Ireland’s Finn Harps 12-0 in a UEFA Cup tie.

The goals rolled in from Charlie George (3), Leighton James (3), Kevin Hector (5), and Bruce Rioch (1). Hector’s five goals set a Derby record for a European match, while the margin is the club’s largest across all competitions.

Other memorable events to happen on this day

1985: Tony Jacklin’s European team inflicted defeat on the Americans in the Ryder Cup for the first time in 28 years at The Belfry.

2003: England Test batsman and wicketkeeper Alec Stewart retired from first-class cricket.

2015: Manchester United defender Luke Shaw suffered a double fracture of the right leg in a 2-1 Champions League defeat at PSV Eindhoven.
